Education

  • BDiv, University of London, London, England, 1963

Testimony

Brian was not brought up in a gospel home, though both his parents later became committed Christians. In his teens he was introduced by some friends to the message of salvation, responded to the call of Christ and soon after felt a strong call to preach the gospel. At first he accepted the usual default position of theistic evolution but soon realized that this was not compatible with a plain reading of Scripture. His early link with AiG began when he was able to organize a visit by Ken Ham to a Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches (FIEC) family conference.

  • Assistant to Derek Prime, Lansdowne Evangelical Church, West Norwood, England, 1963–1966

Personal Information

Born in Devonshire, England, Brian became a Christian during his mid teens and graduated with a Divinity degree from the University of London. He taught in two secondary schools whilst working as assistant to Derek Prime at Lansdowne Evangelical Church in West Norwood, south-east London.

Brian married Barbara and they had two sons, Stephen and Andrew. They moved to Surbiton in Surrey (south-west London) to take up the pastorate of Hook Evangelical Church, where he remained for twenty-nine years. In 1995 Brian accepted the three year appointment to be President of the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches. For two years he and Barbara travelled the United Kingdom visiting many of the 500 churches in affiliation with FIEC. Barbara had been confined to a wheelchair for twelve years and in November 1998 she was called home to be with her Lord. Their story is told in Horizons of Hope.

Brian remains a member at Hook Evangelical Church, and in 2011 married Rosie Crowter whose husband Phil, a Grace Baptist pastor, died in 2008. Rosie has a daughter and two sons. Brian’s ministry is one of writing, editing, lecturing and preaching at churches and conferences. Brian has written twenty books, plus fourteen In Conversation booklets which are available as free downloads on the Day One website. He has also edited two symposiums and is currently Series Editor for the Day One Travel Guide series. In addition to this, Brian has written articles in our Answers magazine and contributed chapters in several books we have had published.

From 1995 Brian has been chairman of the Trustees and Editorial Board of Praise Trust, the charity responsible for the production of the hymnbook Praise! He is also a founder Trustee for Christian Prison Resources. For ten years Brian was a member of the Council of FIEC and of their Executive Committee; he was also a member of the Theological Team of Affinity and chaired the Social Issues Team of Affinity.
