3 Reasons Genesis Is as Relevant as Ever

Bible and Culture

In Genesis 3, the serpent attacked the authority of God’s Word. Satan has been waging war against it ever since. Throughout history, men have used their ideas about evolution, millions of years, and social issues to undermine the clear teaching of Genesis. Today, we must still defend the biblical authority of the first chapters of Scripture.

1. The Lies About Origins Are Accepted as Fact

Since the ideas of evolution and millions of years took center stage in the 1800s, the plain reading of Genesis—and thus biblical authority—has been targeted and undermined. Over the decades, these ideas have grown and gained general acceptance and celebration worldwide.

Today, evolution and millions of years are touted as absolute fact everywhere you look: schools, libraries, colleges, textbooks, museums, zoos, political speeches, music, shows, and movies. These ideas that erode biblical authority are widely assumed to be true. As a result, they are more ubiquitous and dangerous than ever.

2. Current Social Issues Stem From the Rejection of Biblical Truths Found in Genesis

Many Christians view current social issues as the most pressing matters. Abortion, euthanasia, feminism, racism, social justice, gender, sexuality, transgenderism, and climate hysteria—no doubt these issues are critical. But since every issue comes down to putting one’s trust in God’s Word or man’s word, Christians must stand on biblical truth and authority. And where must Christians go to find the doctrines needed to refute the secular ideologies of this age? If you said Genesis, you’re correct!

How do we know that all people, no matter what they look like or where they live, have inherent, indelible, equal value because they’re made in God’s image? Genesis 1:26–27. How do we know marriage is between one man and one woman for life? Genesis 2:18–24. How do we know that there are only two genders? Genesis 1:27. Why is the world so broken? Genesis 3. The real history of Genesis 1–11 provides the foundation and the biblical doctrines necessary to repudiate today’s horrific, secular ideas.

3. The Last Adam Doesn’t Make Sense Without the First Adam

The ultimate answer to all of today’s issues is the gospel. But the proclamation that all people need salvation through the last Adam makes no sense without understanding our connection to the first Adam. The historical reality recorded in Genesis— that every person is descended from the first Adam and thus inherited a sin nature—explains why we’re all sinners by nature and choice. This is why we all need saving through the last Adam, Jesus Christ. Truly, the gospel starts in Genesis. That’s why it is as important as ever that Christians defend biblical authority from the very beginning of Scripture.
