Jesus, the Creator, made it clear that the first marriage between man and woman (Adam and Eve) came at the beginning of creation. If the earth is indeed billions of years old, then the first male and female came nowhere near the beginning of creation. This is a major theological problem.
Is everything reported in a scientific journal automatically as valid as Scripture? What about when the two come into conflict—such as if an archaeologist alleges that the Bible’s history is inaccurate? The church fathers overwhelmingly believed in a recent creation as the Bible taught.
Could God have used evolution? Yes (though the death-focused process is contrary to God’s nature), but it’s not about what He could have done; it’s about what He (not we) said He did. Christians are not called to tell God how He must have created.
I must warn you about a very alarming trend affecting many areas of Christendom today.
Hebrews 4:1–11 has been used by a number of ‘progressive’ creationists as ‘evidence’ that the Bible can be reconciled with the billions of years postulated by evolutionists/uniformitarians.
The idea that God used evolution, and therefore that the book of Genesis needs to be reinterpreted to accommodate so-called millions of years, and to reject the worldwide Flood, is not a modern idea.
We may not be able to master a lot of complex arguments against theistic evolution, but Jesus’ own treatment of Genesis closes the question.
Evolution has never really been an option for the Christian, though it always has been a strong option for the scientist.
We often see vigorous attempts in the media and in the church to persuade people to accept evolution. The irony of this is that the attempt appears to be succeeding just as contraty signs emerge.
Answers in Genesis is an apologetics ministry, dedicated to helping Christians defend their faith and proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ.
