Exceptional geology student Karen Odling is only the second woman since World War II to win the University Medal in Geology from Australia’s University of Sydney.

She was awarded this medal in 1991 when she graduated with a Bachelor of Science (first class honours) degree.

Her supervisor acclaimed her as a ‘truly outstanding student’. She scooped 21 prizes during her academic career.

In an interview with the university’s newspaper, The Gazette, Karen Odling said of geology:

‘It’s technological and creative—you can make it as analytical and wafty as you like, but since it frequently involves trying to picture the situation millions of years ago, you do need a bit of imagination.’
