Why Should We Listen to You?

by John Verderame on November 10, 2000

Evolutionary scientists seem to delight in coming up with ever more evidence that man is not unique or special in any sense of the word. The argument goes something like this: Copernicus argued that the earth is not the center of the universe. Galileo then demonstrated that the earth is just a planet like all the others. Darwin abandoned his belief in a Creator and told us we’re just the result of chance processes acting over time. Finally, Einstein showed that everything seems to be relative—there are no absolutes.

In our day, secular scientists have grown ever more arrogant in their pronunciations about who we are, or better, are not, and where everything came from in the beginning. The late Carl Sagan described us as specks living on a “pale blue dot” floating in the universe. The pope of evolution, Stephen Jay Gould, tells us we are a “lucky accident,” and that things just “happened” to work out right for the development of life on earth. Others write books with titles like, “The Universe Explained,” or “A Brief History of Time,” which push the big bang theory that we resulted from an explosion.

Have these scientists ever asked themselves, “Why should anyone listen to me?” That is a logical question if they really believe what they say. Because, if we really are nothings living on a speck of nothingness floating aimlessly toward destruction, and there are 6 billion of us, then they are one six-billionth of nothing and we should just ignore them completely because what they have to say is worthless!

Isn’t it interesting, though, how man wants to be heard? Isn’t it interesting that the proponents of a purposeless existence want to demonstrate that they have something to say and we should hear and believe them? How many books have men like Sagan and Gould written? Darwin also had to put his thoughts down in writing. Why? Do they all think they had nothing to say? Or do they want people to believe them and follow their teachings?

How is it that a man or woman, whose average lifespan is at best 70–80 years, could make pronouncements about what happened “millions” or even “billions” of years ago, and why we are here, etc., and we should believe them? What we really should do is ask them, “Why should I listen to you?” “How do you know what you are saying is true?”, or better, in Pilate’s words to Christ (John 18:38), “What is truth?” If we are nobodies, the products of chance forces beyond our control, and we live a purposeless existence wandering aimlessly in a purposeless universe, then nothing any scientist can say should even be worth listening to.

However, if we start with the “In the beginning God …” of Holy Scripture, then we have discovered our roots, our purpose, our value, and the Truth. God left us a written Word, too. It is His truth! It is absolute! It has purpose! It does not change, like man’s ideas do. The very reason those who oppose God’s truth write books is because Satan knows the power of the written and spoken word. We find this in the religious world too, not just in science. Every false religion seeks to replace or add to the Word of God with its own so-called teachings or “truths.” Satan demonstrated his understanding of man’s desires from the beginning when he told Adam and Eve, “Ye shall be as gods …” if they would just listen to him and ignore the Word of God. The evolutionary apostles of our day are doing the same thing. They are saying to us, “Listen to me. I know better than God.” They are their own “gods.”

Adam and Eve chose to listen to another authority besides God. They did not become “gods” as they were promised.

So, now let us decide. Did God create in 6 days? Or did it happen in millions of years? Was there death, suffering and bloodshed before Adam? Or did Adam’s and Eve’s sin and rebellion result in the first death? Are we worthless nothings? Or created in the image of God? Do we return to the dust and become once again the molecules that will feed evolution? Or can we ask forgiveness for our sin through Jesus Christ and spend eternity with Him in Paradise in resurrected, perfect and new bodies? Whom are we going to believe? An evolutionist who has seen a few years of life on earth, and can only guess about the past, or God Almighty who was there from the beginning?

Adam and Eve chose to listen to another authority besides God. They did not become “gods” as they were promised. They did not become wiser, as they were promised. They were not better off, as promised. They did come to know evil, as promised. Will we ever learn?
