Popular culture often depicts our ancestors as cave-dwelling, bumbling brutes. This belief comes from the evolutionary view that man evolved from apelike creatures over millions of years. But archaeologists and others regularly uncover evidence of early man’s brilliance, confirming that cavemen were smart enough to build fires, design intricate structures, and cook complex cuisine.
The first chapters of Genesis show that Adam and Eve, the first humans, were creative, inventive, and brilliant, working the garden (Genesis 2:15), naming the animals (Genesis 2:19), and conversing with God in a perfect world (Genesis 2:15–17). And not long after the fall, the Bible records metal workers, architects, and developers of musical instruments. Humans were human—and intelligent—from their creation 6,000 years ago. Every new archaeological find points to that truth.
Near a waterfall in Zambia, archaeologists recently uncovered interlocking logs. They cite these logs as evidence of the earliest wooden structure, 16,000 years earlier than they had estimated.1 Though evolutionists are surprised by the finding, creationists know that God gave ancient humans the intelligence to work with wood—even to build an ark.
In Iraq and Greece, scientists unearthed charred food remains dating back to Neanderthal times. Evolutionists believed early humans ate a simplistic diet of mostly meat, but the findings reveal complex meals that included plants and nuts.2 God gave Adam and Eve the intelligence needed to prepare hearty food—and the recipes have been passed down since.
Stone tools recently discovered in Kenya were allegedly made too early to have been used by the Homo species. Archaeologists conclude that technology like this must have helped our genus evolve.3 But all mankind is descended from Adam, when God bestowed on Adam the duty to work the earth, he gave him the intelligence to make the tools necessary to do so.
A recent finding of flat, heat-damaged stone slabs, carved with engravings, indicates artists crafted by firelight. Evolutionists are surprised by the discovery since the artwork supposedly came from a time when survival would have been difficult. One researcher reported, “It’s fascinating to think that people still found the time and capacity to create art.”4 Yet God created mankind from the beginning with an innate desire and ability to imitate our Creator through art.
Elephant bones showing signs of butchery were found in Germany, revealing that Neanderthals hunted large animals—a job that required complex collaboration. According to scientists, cooperative work was previously thought to be unique to modern humans, but the biblical account of Babel shows collaborative work in Noah’s early descendants.5
In southwest France, an archaeologist discovered a system of dots and dashes accompanying cave paintings of animals.6 Researchers believe the markings to be a method of tracking the reproductive cycles of animals. From the beginning, man was practicing God-given dominion.
One discovery of early clothes-making in Europe indicates that a cave bear was skinned rather than simply butchered. Evolutionists assume these cave bear hides might have provided warm coverings for early humans over a hundred millennia earlier than previously thought.7 But Genesis tells us that mankind began dressing themselves immediately after they rebelled against God (Genesis 3:6–7).
Paleontologists discovered soot in a South African cave, indicating that a supposedly nonhuman species cooked with fire hundreds of thousands of years before humans. In reality, these were likely early descendants of Noah’s family, perhaps sheltering in the cave from the harsh post-flood world—and definitely bright enough to make fire.8
Archaeologists in the Philippines discovered markings on stone tools, suggesting that ropemaking occurred thousands of years earlier than previously thought.9 This finding points to early humans accomplishing more complex tasks than evolutionists believed possible, such as building boats and weaving baskets—most likely everyday work for ingenious image bearers.
As God’s special creation, humans possess the gift of language—but animals also have something to say!
