In an Instagram post (that has since been taken down), the popular Hillsong songwriter, Marty Sampson, announced he was walking away from his professed Christian faith. As he explains the “why” behind this decision, among other things, he mentions the questions that have caused him to doubt. He specifically points to questions of science, trying to understand a loving God with people going to hell, and supposed Bible contradictions, claiming no one talks about such things. But is that true that nobody in the church is offering answers?
By and large, parents, pastors, and others are not equipping young people with answers to the skeptical questions of our day.
Well, actually, what he stated is probably true in many homes and churches—by and large, parents, pastors, and others are not equipping young people with answers to the skeptical questions of our day (some of which are questions Christians have been answering and discussing for generations!).
But that’s not true at Answers in Genesis, in our materials (such as those available through our website and our online store), and at our two attractions, the Ark Encounter and the Creation Museum in Northern Kentucky. We produce many resources that deal with Sampson’s questions, help parents and churches teach the truth that science confirms the Bible and the history we find in Genesis, show that the Bible explains death and suffering in relation to our sin in Adam, and explain that, when properly understood, the Bible does not contradict itself but speaks with one voice. These resources are available—many of them for free on our website!—if Sampson and others will just look.
After his initial post, Sampson followed up with a post regarding individuals he believes to be Christian apologists that others should look up and listen to, including William Lane Craig and John Lennox, both of whom frankly compromise God’s Word in Genesis with millions of years. In another post, he shared a photo of Dr. Francis Collins, another Christian who is an ardent believer in and defender of evolution and millions of years. Collins also founded BioLogos, an organization devoted to getting churches to reject a literal Genesis and adopt evolution.
But these men all undermine the authority of the Word of God. So it’s no wonder Sampson doesn’t hold to God’s Word as the authority if those he is gleaning his information from are unwilling to do so in every area. When you compromise God’s clear Word with man’s ideas about the past, you elevate man as the authority over God’s Word. Instead of the perfect, eternal, infallible Creator being the authority—sinful, fallible human beings are. And once you’ve opened the door to compromise, where do you stop?
When you compromise God’s clear Word with man’s ideas about the past, you elevate man as the authority over God’s Word.
Sadly, many young people in our churches have been taught by compromising church leaders to believe in millions of years. And that would mean the death, suffering, and disease we see today has been going on for millions of years (and before Adam’s fall)—thus, it's God's fault! But death, disease, and suffering are a consequence of our sin since Adam—it's all humanity's fault. Really, we sentenced ourselves to hell because we rebelled against God—but God stepped into history in the person of his Son to become Jesus Christ, the God-man, to pay the penalty for our sin. God offers us the free gift of salvation to rescue us from hell.
This sad situation with Sampson is a reminder to parents and the church to teach apologetics to counter today's attacks on God's Word. And it’s a reminder to us all not to put fallible humans on a pedestal! Always judge what everyone’s behavior and teachings are against the absolute authority of God’s Word.

Was the miracle of Jesus feeding the 5,000 with just five loaves and two fish a little less than miraculous?
