Christianity Under Attack at the Movies

by Ken Ham on December 5, 2013

An atheist movie that is being shown in a number of movie theaters across America had its public premier last week. Produced in a documentary style, The Unbelievers costars the well-known atheists Richard Dawkins of England and Lawrence Krauss of Arizona State University. These atheists have continued increasing their attacks on Christians in the Western world and more aggressively than ever proclaiming their anti-God religion.

Our experience with many atheists has been that because they really have nothing to promote except meaninglessness and hopelessness, and they really have become focused on attacking Christians. They usually use ad hominem attacks, blaspheme God, and utter numerous curse words. It seems to me they go out of their way to show their anger at God. Why do they do this?

Well, because if the Bible is God’s Word and if it is true (and it is!), then it means all people, including these atheists, are sinners in need of salvation. It means that marriage is one man for one woman and that abortion is wrong. It means they are not their own gods but need to kneel in submission to the God of creation to whom they are accountable—the God who determines right and wrong as well as good and bad, because He is the absolute authority.

And, because they know God exists—as Romans 1 clearly tells us that God put that knowledge in each one of us—they, therefore, have to actively “suppress the truth in unrighteousness” (Romans 1:18).

Really, The Unbelievers is just another example of atheists shaking their fist at God and vehemently attacking Christianity in their vain attempts to justify their rebellion against God.

One of our staff members attended a showing of the movie and reported back to us:

In all reality it is not a dramatic movie but a documentary of their [Dawkins and Krauss] speaking engagements in Australia and a few in the U.S. They do not show nor explain anything scientific, but they trash talk against Christians and God.

The most heart-wrenching sight was not the movie (although it was disgusting), but seeing parents take their young children (5–12 years of age) to the film to hear blasphemy against God and every curse word imaginable.

The movie’s theme can be summed up as urging viewers to “honor these cool and tireless evangelistic rock star atheists.” The camera follows both men who speak at several venues, from 25 students to packed auditoriums, TV appearances, and radio calls from their hotel rooms.

One of the first speaking engagements is of Krauss speaking to about 25 Muslim students. He shows them praying on campus, then begins to speak to them in a mostly empty classroom. Krauss gently suggests they question everything in religion, since “science” proves the Big Bang and evolution is true. He repeats these types of statements over and over without presenting any concrete evidence. Interestingly enough, as Krauss speaks to the Muslim students, not once does he directly put their religion down nor make reference against to Allah as he constantly does with Jesus (e.g., his famous statement, “Forget Jesus, the stars died for you”). The most vehement hatred of these atheists is for Christianity.

From there, the movie goes to Richard Dawkins speaking on national television in Australia titled Q & A. He is on a panel with Roman Catholic Cardinal George Pell. It was sad to see that Pell believes we evolved from Neanderthals and does not take a stand on Genesis. The audience laughed at him.

Throughout the movie, there are very bold statements and varying interactions. Here is a summary of some of those comments (slightly paraphrased) and scenes with other speakers and comedians:

  • Religion and Christianity are evil. (Krauss and Dawkins)
  • We [atheists] need to take back morality and make it our own. (Dawkins)
  • It’s a waste our intelligent brains will one day die. (Dawkins)
  • “God, if you are real and so big, here’s your chance to strike me dead” is stated. Nothing happens and everybody cheers. (Washington DC rally)
  • At the Washington DC rally there is a large mannequin dressed up as Jesus with breasts of a woman (repeatedly shown).
  • We need to rewrite public policy and get “science” to every student.
  • Krauss flaunts singer Miley Cyrus tweeting his quote, “Forget Jesus, the stars died for you.”
  • Christians who were boldly and respectfully protesting an event are given the middle finger, cursed at, and surrounded by men looking for a physical fight.
  • Dawkins calls Jesus as God’s scapegoat to be tortured for humanity.
  • Dawkins scrutinizes God as a horrible father.
  • Again, the movie shows these two men on a tireless rock-star crusade against Christianity.
  • Millions of years is hailed as fact.
  • Dawkins himself states that if you cannot believe in Genesis and a young earth, you can dump the rest of the Bible.
  • Anything that is not founded on evolution is against logic. (Krauss)
After one of the screenings, I asked Krauss amongst a small crowd what he thought about the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter in Kentucky. He said, “[AiG] keeps birthing the wrong belief not based on ‘science,’ and it is a sad and horrible parity.”

Then I asked him how to refute historical science vs. observational science. Krauss said, “There is no such thing as historical science. . . . It’s all observational science. . . . We get information from what we observe.” Of course he has to say that because he refuses to accept that atheism is a belief—and it is a blind-faith belief.

Movies like The Unbelievers confirm that brainwashing and extreme antagonism from atheists is infecting our world and is knocking at the doors of the church. Sadly many churches succumb to secular beliefs and, therefore, undermine the foundation of God’s Word.

And remember, it is atheists like these that go to the courts to get anything Christian thrown out of the public schools and the culture as a whole. They want their religion of atheism imposed on the culture. When they remove Christian symbols or creation and the Bible from schools, they are not then imposing a neutral position (since one is either for or against Christ), but imposing their anti-God religion on the schools and culture. Christians need to wake up and understand the spiritual battle. Sadly, many Christians have been lulled into thinking that by removing anything Christian, then a neutral situation results. This is simply not true. There is no neutral position:

“He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.” (Matthew 12:30)
Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. (James 4:4)
Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. (Romans 8:7)
For in it [the gospel] the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.” For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse. (Romans 1:17–20)
After reading this blog, I suggest you read Romans 1 slowly. Yes, this is a description of what we are seeing happening in this nation. Make sure you put on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6) and get involved in the spiritual battle raging around us.

By the way, we reviewed an interview with Krauss and Dawkins who were discussing this movie. Also, there is an extended chapter in the New Answers Book 4 that discusses this new movie and specifically the tactics Krauss and Dawkins are using in the movie.

I trust you understand even more now why we launched the current billboard campaign in Times Square. Here is our first billboard to challenge the atheists:

And here is our current billboard campaign in Times Square that runs until Christmas:

Spread the video links above to as many as you can and challenge other Christians to engage in the battle in our culture.

By the way, in a totally different way, I believe the upcoming movie Noah starring Russell Crowe will also be an attack on Christianity because it will be in reality an attack on the truthfulness of the Scriptures.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

Ken
