These devotionals are designed for one lesson per week for family or private devotions.

Have you ever stared at a beautiful sunset or noticed the fascinating shape of trees or watched butterflies flit about? Have you gazed at the stars in their galaxies or watched an ant carry a load? If so, you’ve seen evidence of God’s handiwork. As you observe, you just might learn a little more about the Creator.

A secular society would have us believe that the universe came about by random chance over eons of time. But a design has to have a designer. Genesis 1 tells us that God created not only humans but also the world around us.

Linguist Charles Taylor wrote about knowing our Creator: “The first three words of the Bible, bereshith bara Elohim, refer to history (there was a beginning, bereshith), then to creation (bara, he created), and then to the Creator, Elohim. God, therefore, is a Creator, and operates in real history, not in some abstract realm of man’s imagination.” Our Creator has an eye for beauty, an engineer’s brain, and a father’s heart that wants to bring provision and pleasure to his creation.

In the evidence of God’s work, we get a better view of his heart and who he is. Scientist and botanist George Washington Carver wrote, “Reading about nature is fine, but if a person walks in the woods and listens carefully, he can learn more than what is in books, for they speak with the voice of God.”

Though we need Scripture to learn about the gospel, we can learn a lot about our Creator from nature. In this series of devotionals, look at Scripture and see what you can learn about the One who made this world and our relationship with him. Be sure to pray for godly discernment before and after each study.

In these devotionals, consider the authority of God’s Word in fundamental aspects of life. Read the Scriptures referenced to understand God’s thoughts on the topics. Discuss what you’ve learned and how you can apply the truths to stand strong on the authority of Scripture in this confused world.

Weekly Devotional

Week 1—The Creator in Creation

Genesis 2:4–21; Psalm 19:1–6; Job 12:7–10, 37:14–16; Romans 1:20

Our world did not evolve over millions of years. It was intricately created only thousands of years ago, and it points to the Creator. What are your favorite aspects of nature that showcase God as the Creator?

Week 2—Dependence

Ecclesiastes 4:9–12; John 6:35, 15:5; Galatians 6:2

Nature has an interwoven dependence system. For example, insects depend on plants for food, and plants depend on insects for pollination. How does this system resemble our dependence on God and other people?

Week 3—Behind the Scenes

Genesis 50:15–20; Romans 8:28; Philippians 1:6

During winter, everything in nature seems to take a long nap. But under the chilly surface of the earth, bacteria, fungi, and other organisms are preparing for life in the spring. Similarly, even when we don’t see him, God is working in our lives.

Week 4—Transformation

Psalm 51:10–12; Ecclesiastes 3:11; Romans 12:2; 2 Corinthians 3:18, 5:17

One minute the earth seems dead. Then brittle grass becomes lush pastures. Birds warble from budding trees. Flowers pop from the ground. Transformation is part of nature. How is transformation part of the spiritual life?

Week 5—The Necessity of Nutrition

Matthew 4:4, 11:28; John 6:26–35; 1 Peter 2:2–3

Plants need nutrients to grow and thrive. Nutrients can come from interesting sources, including decaying vegetation and animal waste. Our Creator has designed us to need nutrients for our bodies and also our souls. What keeps us healthy spiritually?

Week 6—Healing with God’s Strength

2 Corinthians 4:8–9; Ephesians 6:10–18; Philippians 4:13

Stems break and leaves turn brown from drought or lack of nutrients. However, plants survive, heal, and rebound. Humans also rebuild and move forward in God’s strength. When did God help you heal from a devastating event?

Week 7—Bearing Fruit

Genesis 1:11, 9:1; Matthew 7:17–20; Galatians 5:22–24

Everything in nature is designed to be part of a cycle. For example, plants bear seeds to keep their species going, and they bear fruit that feeds creatures and humans. Similarly, when we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives, we should bear fruit of the Spirit. How might that fruit be used for more than our own benefit?

Week 8—Death and Renewal

Psalm 51:10; John 5:24, 12:24; 1 Corinthians 15:21–22, 51–57; 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18

In nature, death often brings life. When animals or plants die, their decomposing bodies release chemicals back into the air and soil, providing food for some creatures and fertilizer for the earth. What does Scripture tell us about death and renewal for people?

Week 9—God’s Power over Creation

Joshua 10:8–14; Job 37:6; Jeremiah 5:22, 10:13; Matthew 8:23–27

The Creator has power over what he created. How does God’s power and rule over the universe affect our lives and our trust in him?

Week 10—A Creator of Details

Psalm 104:10–14, 139:14–16; Matthew 6:28–34; Colossians 1:16–17

Nature shows us God’s brilliant ability to create complex systems and beings. God is the king of details. Notice the details in these verses.

Week 11—Our Creator’s Care

Genesis 1:29–30; Psalm 136:25; Matthew 10:29–31; John 3:16

Humans are the crowning glory of God’s creation because we are made in his image with an eternal soul. What does Scripture say about how much God loves us?

Week 12—Variety in Creation

Psalm 95:4–5, 104:24; 1 Corinthians 15:37–41

Have you noticed the variety of creatures in a zoo or the many kinds of plants in a nursery? God created with imagination. List some evidence of God’s creativity in the world.

Week 13—A Faithful Creator

Genesis 8:22; Psalm 119:90; Isaiah 40:28; Lamentations 3:22–23

Each day is 24 hours. Spring never comes before winter. The tide comes in every evening. What do the dependable cycles of the earth show us about the Creator?
