Educated to Accept Evolution

Education seems to be a leading factor in whether a person accepts evolution. Researchers used data collected from about 5,000 Generation X participants throughout their lives—from middle school to midlife—and found that 44% of those participants, when in middle and high school, showed uncertainty about evolution. But in the 15 years following high school, those attitudes shifted.

After the participants went to college and entered the workforce, 28% concluded that evolution was undoubtedly true. The study revealed that educational experiences, such as college-level science courses, were a determining factor in the acceptance of evolution, whereas religious beliefs were a factor in the rejection of evolution.

This is a sobering reminder of education’s influence on a young person’s worldview and beliefs. Christian youth must be wise and discerning in what colleges they choose to attend, but parents should also emphasize the importance of a biblical worldview throughout their children’s lives. Whether at college or elsewhere, in today’s world, children are bound to encounter evolutionary ideas. It’s vital that young people know how to think biblically.
