A Not-quite Apology

by Ken Ham on October 18, 2008

Some of you may have read the nationally syndicated column (it appeared in newspapers all across America -- such as the Chicago Tribune and also our local newspaper The Cincinnati Enquirer) by Leonard Pitts, winner of a Pulitzer prize for column writing. After strongly criticizing vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin in a column for possibly being a creationist, he issued something of an apology for coming across as too harsh towards Christians who accept the book of Genesis: “I had demoted the Christian creation story to the status of parable and suggested by implication that anyone who believes it is, as one reader put it, a ‘fool.’ Which brings us to those seldom-used words: You're right. I apologize.” That was good to read – if he would have stopped right there. But in the next several paragraphs he attacked the book of Genesis that Bible-believing Christians accept, and brought up so-called difficulties in the Bible. Here is a sample of a “letter to the editor” that we submitted to many papers across the U.S. (our Cincinnati paper did not print it) – and if you have seen this letter in your paper, please send it to us. Because of a word limit, we couldn’t write much more than what you see below; and we have a fuller perspective at http://www.answersingenesis.org/articles/nab/who-was-cains-wife *************

Sirs:

Columnist Leonard Pitts (Oct. 7) offered a half-hearted apology for writing harshly against Christians who accept the book of Genesis. Yet he proceeded to go on the offensive again, trying to stump Christians with a variation on the question: where did Cain find his wife?

As we share in our new Creation Museum, Cain probably married his sister (the Bible says that Adam and Eve had sons AND daughters). Back then, closely related parents didn’t have to worry about possible problems/deformities in their offspring for they had few or no imperfect genes (which is very different from people today). The law against close intermarriage came through Moses over 2,000 years later – when the effects of mistakes in the genes (mutations) had accumulated to such a degree that children could have problems if their parents were related.

We have web articles about this intriguing topic on our museum website: www.creationmuseum.org

For those newspapers that want no more than 100 words in a letter to the editor, we had to cut this down a little more.

Ever since the 1925 Scopes trial, when Clarence Darrow brought it up in court, this Cain’s wife question continues to be used to attempt to show that Christianity is an unreasonable faith.

ANOTHER WORD FROM THE PARKERS

Last week we had a wonderful reunion with Gary and Mary Parker here at the Creation Museum—they worked with us in the 1990s, traveling the country giving AiG seminars and children’s workshops. See my blog last week. Mary sent us a kind note recently:
Thanks so much for the royal treatment we were given on our visit to the Museum. It was a tremendous blessing for Gary and me to not only see the fabulous Creation Museum, but to renew old friendships again. Gary and I enjoyed strolling down memory lane with all of you. We also enjoyed and appreciated seeing and meeting many of your new staff. And I know you are reminded as we are ‘to whom much is given, much is required’ a great responsibility to our risen Lord and King. We will keep you in our prayers and will certainly pass on information to others of the opportunity offered by the Creation Museum.

DEVOTION

Wrath

(1Th 2:15-16) Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men: Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.

The wrath of God comes when: the Lord Jesus Christ & His messengers are hated; sin is no longer a shame, but flagrantly open; & preaching the Gospel is illegal.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying
