According to a recent poll, 52% of US adults aged 18–34 support banning abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected (the heart actually begins beating very early in a child’s development—by day 22 in the womb—and can be detected usually around six weeks gestational age). This is encouraging and good news for the pro-life movement and for the lives of unborn babies. Banning abortion after the heartbeat stage of development would save lives (and has in several states that have passed such bills), but we do need to understand so much more:
Life begins at fertilization—not at day 22, when a heartbeat begins, or day 28, when heart rhythm is established, or day 40, when Baby develops a sense of touch, or week 25, when Baby becomes “viable” and can survive outside of mom’s womb (with significant medical interventions). All of these are arbitrary points along the developmental timeline of a human being, and none of them determine personhood.
From the moment of fertilization, everything that makes you “you” is present—no new genetic information is added after this stage. We are 100% human, made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), right from fertilization. Abortion at any stage is killing a human being made in the image of God.
One can’t legislate a person’s morality. Unless people’s hearts are committed to God and to his Word, the battle will ultimately be lost. The only ultimate, lasting answer to the current sanctity-of-life crisis and the culture of death is the gospel message.
Abortion is the murder of unborn children, and it should break the hearts of every believer.
Abortion is the murder of unborn children, and it should break the hearts of every believer. The Lord crafts each child (Psalm 139:14), and he knows all of their days:
Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed, and in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them. (Psalm 139:16 NKJV)
If this poll is accurate (the sample size was rather small), it’s wonderful to see that many young adults would support heartbeat bans—but they need to understand: (1) that life begins before the heart begins beating; and (2) they all need to respond to the gospel of Jesus Christ. You can help educate others (including those in the church!; so many Christians are not equipped to think biblically on this issue) by using the following resources to disciple others:

Marian Tompson recently quit La Leche League because of a new “inclusivity policy” that allows men to attend meetings to be supported in “chestfeeding” newborns.
Was the miracle of Jesus feeding the 5,000 with just five loaves and two fish a little less than miraculous?
