Debra Shatell was a volunteer in our Florence, KY USA offices a year ago. The passion she demonstrated for proclaiming Biblical truths was clearly evident-and sincerely appreciated. When she told us that her husband had been transferred to Sacramento, California, we were saddened, but Debra assured us that when she moved, she would still be “working” for AiG.
We just received a long letter from Debra. She reported that she has been heavily involved in “creation evangelism” efforts in California. In particular, Debra has been visiting area churches to introduce pastors to the Bible-proclaiming ministry of AiG. In doing this, she composed a letter to each pastor, portions of which she has granted us permission to reprint here on the Web.
We hope that you will be encouraged to know that the apologetics (i.e. Bible-defending) ministry of Answers in Genesis is building up people in their faith-and is presenting the Gospel.
I have found the Answers in Genesis ministry to be a Godsend to my faith in Christ Jesus. I pray that the ministry can and will be used by churches around the world to give a solid foundation in the authority of the Bible, and thus faith in Christ Jesus as the Savior of the world. In addition to the tapes and brochures I have enclosed, I am including my testimony as an example of the impact AiG’s literature can have on unbelievers as well as believers.
At a crusade in Portland, Oregon many years ago, the truth of the Bible was preached; and it was on the truth of the Bible as the “infallible” word of God that I based my faith in Jesus Christ. It wasn’t long before the Secular Humanism in the public schools, however, was to challenge my faith by chiseling away at the “infallibility” of the Bible. The schools did this through the teaching of evolution as truth.
From this point, I began to struggle with questions such as: “How can I believe the truth of the Gospel if the whole Bible isn’t true?” Also, “If the account of creation isn’t literal and is a matter of interpretation, what else isn’t literal in the Bible?” My quest for the truth of the Bible began.
I went from church to church seeking understanding about creation, but only found evasions and compromises. I was often told that all that mattered was that I believed in the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior. Well, that was fine and dandy, but how could I believe the testimony of Jesus as Savior if the whole Bible wasn’t true? This question was often answered with the statement: “You just have to have faith.”
As I struggled, I wondered about the scripture that says: “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing [not interpreting] the word of truth” (II Timothy 2:15). The problem for me was that I was ashamed because I didn’t have answers. I was also disillusioned with churches because I had gone to them to seek the knowledge I needed not to be ashamed, and it appeared to me that they had not studied and rightly divided the truth either. So, I began to seek answers on my own.
It was at this point that I discovered creation books. ANSWERS!!! I was so glad that there were people out there, credible people, who had struggled with the same issues as I had, who had studied and obtained answers. Consequently, my foundation is now firm.
I began to have an increasing desire to see churches obtain this knowledge. I began to pray that in some way the churches would find an avenue. I shouldn’t have been too surprised when I discovered the Answers in Genesis organization. AiG has devoted itself to being a Christ-centered, evangelistic ministry defending the complete authority of the Bible. AiG has carefully selected and distributed books, tapes, videos, etc. for all ages that defend the truth of the Bible and promote faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior.
Please, for the sake of people like myself who desire to study to show ourselves approved unto God, investigate the Answers in Genesis Web site at www.AnswersInGenesis.org.
Editor’s note for US, Canadian, and Australia Web visitors only: If you would like to introduce your pastor to this apologetics ministry, please contact us with your postal address and we would be glad to send you complimentary materials that you can hand-deliver to your pastor. This would include the audio tape “The Relevance of Genesis” by Ken Ham of AiG, a sample copy of our newsletter, and a flyer that promotes this Web site. Encourage your pastor to listen to the tape and then develop his own sermon so that your whole congregation can be blessed.
If you live in the US, Australia, or Canada and can take part in this “creation evangelism” effort within your church, we thank you!
