Creationists Don’t Mind Gaps in the Fossil Record

Darwin feared that gaps in the fossil record posed a problem for reconstructing the evolutionary timeline, but a new study claims to put those fears to rest.

Using computer simulations of geological processes, a team of researchers from the UK and the Netherlands modeled how fossils could form over long periods of time. They claim that their findings show that even with gaps in the fossil record, we can still effectively reconstruct evolutionary history without any major problems.

“The regularity of the gaps, rather than the incompleteness itself, is what determines the reconstruction of evolutionary history,” said the study’s lead, Niklas Hohmann. “We have a good understanding of where the gaps are, how long they are, and what causes them. With this geological knowledge, we can reconstruct evolution hundreds of millions of years ago at an unprecedented temporal resolution.”

When we start with the history in Genesis, Christians can explain fossils without fear.

Our starting points determine how we interpret evidence—or in this case, lack of evidence.

Darwin’s followers see gaps in the fossil record because they are looking for transitional forms. But no one has seen fossils form over long periods of time. And fossils are the result of organisms buried rapidly, which is consistent with the global flood. We won’t find any transitional forms in the fossil record because God created animals according to their kinds during creation week, and he created humans in his image, separate from the animals. So whether they are looking for gaps or claiming to see beyond the gaps, evolutionists’ starting points are all wrong. When we start with the history in Genesis, Christians can explain fossils without fear.
