In June, the Massachusetts House unanimously passed a bill that would allow mothers to sell their babies through commercial surrogacy.

Surrogacy typically means a fertilized egg purchased or provided by the intended mother or couple is implanted in the surrogate’s womb. But this new bill would allow a mother to become pregnant via a sperm bank and then sell her biological offspring to someone else.

The Massachusetts bill also strips any gender-specific language from the definition of parentage, redefining the word as “a person’s intent to be a parent of a child.” This new definition and bill will make it easier for LGBTQ couples to become parents, since one of the parents in a same-sex couple is always nonbiological and must go through a legal adoption process with the child.

The bill is yet another attack on the family, redefining parents as whoever claims to be a child’s parents. But perhaps an even greater danger is the potential for trafficking, turning babies into a commodity for monetary gain.

Children are precious image bearers of God that should be treasured and raised in the fear and admonition of the Lord. This bill is another example of evil humans doing what is right in their own eyes, disregarding God’s good plan established at the beginning of creation when he made male and female and called them to have children (Genesis 1:26–28).
