The works of Charles Spurgeon have inspired millions of Christians around the world for over a hundred years. His wisdom and insight into God’s Word and world have helped others discover the richness of Scripture. Answers in Genesis is pleased to present the text of a large collection of sermons from this 19th century “Prince of Preachers.”
The incarnation of God must have been staggering even to the intellect of seraphs, and again and again they must have said to each other, “Who is this?”
Do not be dispirited, Christ will not be disappointed. “He shall see the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied.”
We want to preach on justification tonight as a matter of experience, as a thing experienced, felt, enjoyed, and understood in the soul.
We are to examine ourselves each time we come. Each man is to do so. No one is to shirk the personal duty.
By the term, “the fear of God,” we understand in Holy Scripture the totality of true religion.
Christ is constantly raising the spiritually dead, and giving them life.
God has taught man to plough, to break the clods, to sow the different kinds of grain, and to thresh out the different kinds of seeds.
Observe the way in which the apostles were accustomed to incite believers in Christ to the performance of their duties.
Wherever we may wander around the circumference, we always feel a drawing in of our soul towards the centre, which is “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
At this time we would go away to Calvary, and there stand and hear our Redeemer crying, “I thirst,” as he bears the guilt of sin for us.
The disciples went to Christ, the lawgiver, the author and finisher of their faith, and, lifting up their hearts to him in the prayer, “Lord, increase our faith.”
Unless the Holy Spirit breaks up the heart by the plough of the law and sows it with the seed of the gospel, not a single ear of holiness will any of us grow.
Jesus Christ is not to be greater, then, essentially than he is now. He is “God over all, blessed for ever.”
Come, then, let us take a walk with Solomon, and stand with him and consider and learn instruction while we look at this broken-down fence.
Even in our Lord’s poverty he becomes our instructor, just as in his death he becomes our Saviour.
God’s servants will be dealt roughly with by their Master, and the brethren of Christ must accept it.
The love of God is what fills our mortal existence with the brightness of heaven, and makes us feast on immortal joys, even in this vale of tears.
Special grace will cause us to marvel. It will be emphatically so at the last dread day.
Things can never be so bad that God cannot bring deliverance in his own time.
We must bring something like spiritual worship, and when we have learned to praise God with the understanding as well as with our hearts, surely it will be all the more acceptable to him.
The law of Moses made clear how sinful sin was; the purpose for which it was sent was, not to make men holy, but to make men see how unholy they were.
We are “born to sorrow”; and if our cup is not embittered with it tonight, we must not expect to be long without a taste of the gall in our mouths.
The work of God at Philippi went on very quietly and successfully in the hands of Paul and Silas.
It will be a rich enjoyment if we shall grasp and make our very own the precious things which are presented here to the whole redeemed family of the living God.
These sermons from Charles Spurgeon are a series that is for reference and not necessarily a position of Answers in Genesis. Spurgeon did not entirely agree with six days of creation and dives into subjects that are beyond the AiG focus (e.g., Calvinism vs. Arminianism, modes of baptism, and so on).
