Matching Dinosaur Footprints Separated by Atlantic Ocean

The fact that fossil trackways (footprints) exist is in itself incredible—footprints aren’t routinely fossilizing in the present. It takes unique conditions to rapidly bury footprints before they can be washed away. But a new find makes one fossil trackway even more incredible because the trackway is split between two continents and separated by the Atlantic Ocean.

A set of over 260 dinosaur footprints (from a three-toed theropod) were uncovered, and they’re split between Brazil in South America and Cameroon, West Africa—3,700 miles away. The study author explains:

We determined that in terms of age, these footprints were similar. . . . In their geological and plate tectonic contexts, they were also similar. In terms of their shapes, they are almost identical.

According to the evolutionary worldview, these tracks were left alongside an ancient river or lake, impressed into wet mud or silt 120 million years ago. Tectonic activity then moved the continents apart, and the South Atlantic Ocean was created.

But in a biblical worldview, we interpret these fossils very differently because we understand the event of the global flood of Noah’s day around 4,300 years ago. Creatures hurrying to higher ground as the floodwaters threatened them left behind footprints which were quickly buried and preserved as trace fossils. The land later catastrophically broke apart, and the continents quickly moved (via catastrophic plate tectonics) to their current positions.

The flood explains most of the fossils. Millions of years of slow and gradual processes don’t.
