Gay “marriage” is 10 years old today in this nation.
Of course, there’s really no such thing as gay “marriage” because the Supreme Court of the United States didn’t invent marriage. God did—he created, ordained, and defined marriage—so no one (including this land’s highest court) has the authority to usurp God’s authority and redefine what he created.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27)
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. (Genesis 2:24)
God is the final authority on all things—including marriage. That’s why he is the only one with the right to define marriage.
But that doesn’t stop sinful humans from shaking their fist at God and doing what seems right in their own eyes. And that’s what happened in 2015 when SCOTUS made their disastrous decision in Obergefell vs. Hodges, legalizing gay “marriage” across the United States. They acted as their own gods by redefining what God had created and defined.
I recently saw a study from the Pew Research Center on “The Experiences of LGBTQ Americans Today,” marking the 10-year anniversary of Obergefell. This study highlighted the growing acceptance of gay “marriage” (63% of Americans are favorable toward it, as of a 2023 survey) with “61% of LGBTQ adults say[ing] there’s at least a fair amount of acceptance for people who are gay or lesbian” (that number decreases significantly for those who identify as bisexual or transgender). These adults say there’s more acceptance than 10 years ago, and they expect acceptance levels to increase in another decade—and I thought the why was very interesting.
They said they believe cultural acceptance of LGBTQ lifestyles has increased because of “more support from religious leaders and . . . greater representation in politics and entertainment.” In other words, LGBTQ individuals believe it’s religious leaders who have had a huge part in dulling the national conscience toward sexual sin!
This is a direct consequence of churches, Christian institutions, and Christian leaders refusing to stand on the authority of God’s Word. Because so many have compromised God’s clear Word in Genesis regarding creation and the age of the earth, it’s no surprise so many have gone on to compromise God’s clear Word when it comes to marriage and gender. There’s a definite connection between rejecting a literal Genesis and then compromising through the rest of Scripture. These leaders are loud and proud of their compromise, and it’s had a huge effect on the culture at large. Scripture has warnings for shepherds like these who lead people astray:
For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. (Jude 1:4)
These are hidden reefs at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, shepherds feeding themselves; waterless clouds, swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, uprooted; wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever. (Jude 1:12–13)
Yes, God takes false teaching very seriously because it destroys people, making them complacent in their sin and driving them away from the only One who can save them: Jesus Christ. But for sinners to be saved, they must recognize they are sinners in need of Christ’s shed blood to forgive their sin and cleanse them from all unrighteousness! But these false teachers don’t preach sin or repentance. They preach a false gospel that twists God’s love and mercy into a license to sin!
A sinful identity as a homosexual or a transgender person won’t offer true happiness, fulfillment, or peace—not in this life and certainly not in the one to come.
A sinful identity as a homosexual or a transgender person won’t offer true happiness, fulfillment, or peace—not in this life and certainly not in the one to come. Only Christ and a life surrendered to him offers that. Instead of encouraging people to sink deeper into their sin, it’s the job of the church to be salt and light, calling people to repentance and faith in Christ with gentleness, patience, and humility. I pray that the coming decade does not see an increase in acceptance of all things LGBTQ because God will awaken his church to stand boldly on God’s Word and preach the gospel to all people!
At Answers in Genesis, we always stand boldly on God’s Word beginning in Genesis and judge the culture accordingly. Sadly, many church leaders have changed their stand on God’s Word to accommodate the moral relativism of the culture!
If you’d like to learn more about how we as Christians can take a bold, biblical stand on sexuality, make plans to attend our Answers for Women conference in 2026 or watch this YouTube presentation from AiG’s Avery Foley, dealing with the biblical view of sexuality and the progressive objections.
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
