Remembering President Jimmy Carter’s Visit to the Ark Encounter

Former President Jimmy Carter passed away earlier this week at the age of 100. I had the privilege of meeting President Carter in 2016 when he and his wife (who passed away last year) visited the Ark Encounter a few weeks before it opened to the public (you can read about that visit here). While he was very theologically liberal and certainly didn’t agree with all of our message, he was gracious, and we enjoyed the opportunity to meet him.

I recently made a short video for my YouTube channel and shared memories of his visit:

After the Ark Encounter tour, we all had lunch at a restaurant near the Ark. Mark Looy, one of the cofounders of AiG, joined us, and he has shared with me his journal entry for that day and some of the topics we chatted about over lunch:

2016—June 10—at the Ark Encounter and then during a Cracker Barrel lunch, I chatted with President Carter about a number of things: 1. sports (he was an avid New York Yankees baseball fan growing up); 2. Middle East politics (he mildly chastised me for stating that since Egypt and Israel signed the Camp David agreements that Pres. Carter crafted in 1979, there had been only one skirmish along the border—he corrected me to say that not even a skirmish has ever occurred; oops); 3. indicated that he did not respect most of the highest elected officials in his party (except for John Kerry who would sometimes call him for advice on Middle Eastern affairs) . . . ; 4. Pres. Carter gave us a little grammar lesson, saying that the word “incredible” should rarely be used because it means that something is just not credible.

We are thankful that President Carter, who loved carpentry and woodworking, had the opportunity to see the Ark Encounter (even if it was still under construction!), and we pray he was impacted by the message of biblical authority and the gospel.

When anyone passes away, it’s a reminder to all of us that death is inevitable for every person, as we are all sinners and therefore under the judgment of death. But it’s also a time to be reminded to make sure we have trusted Christ for salvation and therefore know we will spend eternity with the Lord and not suffer that second death of eternal separation from our God.

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. (John 3:36, emphasis added)

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken
