“Why Do You Seek the Living Among the Dead?”

Happy Resurrection Sunday! What a joy to celebrate the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ from the grave and his victory over sin and death. For Mally and me, our favorite Easter hymn is this one, but sadly, very few churches sing it anymore:

Up from the grave He arose
With a mighty triumph o’er His foes
He arose a Victor from the dark domain
And He lives forever with His saints to reign
He arose! (He arose)
He arose! (He arose)
Hallelujah! Christ arose!

It’s only because of Christ’s death and resurrection that we as Christians have any hope, joy, meaning, or purpose.

It’s only because of Christ’s death and resurrection that we as Christians have any hope, joy, meaning, or purpose. But praise be to God—because he did come, live a perfect life, die in our place, and rise from the dead, we have all of that and so much more!

There’s so much that can be said on Easter in celebration, but, of course, Scripture says it best, so I’ll leave you with these wonderful words from the Scriptures.

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” (John 11:25)

For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. (John 6:40)

But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” (Luke 24:1–7)

Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. (Romans 6:8–11)

And finally,

Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. (Hebrews 13:20–21)
