Religulous—Vulgar and Blasphemous

by Ken Ham on October 4, 2008

Because the Creation Museum (and myself) feature in the new movie by God-hating comedian Bill Maher, a small group of us from AiG (reluctantly) went to see the movie—as we expect some media interviews we need to be prepared for. (We went during a matinee, and saved some money in the process, I’m happy to report!)

It was Bill Maher at his worst, with vulgar language, and going out of his way to blaspheme God and mock Christians (as well as mocking other religious groups)—as if he were shaking his fist at God in an act of God-hating defiance. The fact that God is a gracious, loving God, not willing that any should perish, is obvious in that Bill Maher is still with us!

The section where I appeared being interviewed by Bill Maher (and the Creation Museum was featured) was one of the more “sane” sections of the movie—though it was a typical cut-and-paste job.

Some of you may recall that over a year ago, a documentary crew, under false pretenses and giving a false name of the producer, came to the Creation Museum (under construction) to interview me. Then, through further clever deception, they set me up to be interviewed by Bill Maher, abusing the privileges our security gave them and breaking our security rules and protocols. But then again, for such God-haters, why would they have a high level of ethics when morality can be whatever they want to define it to be?

I challenge Bill Maher to show the ENTIRE video segment of my interview (uncut) to show what really happened—like the section where Bill Maher claimed there was a particular issue in the Bible of concern to him and when I challenged him to show me—he pretended to look for it—then gave up as he didn’t have a clue. The interview in the movie was a cut-and-paste job—but we weren’t surprised at that as Bill Maher is apparently not interested in truth, only in mocking Christians in particular for the sake of “comedy.”

Even though Maher also mocked Jews, Muslims, and others, the major theme of the movie was to denigrate Christianity. Most of those Maher interviewed were not in mainstream Christianity or were carefully chosen because they were not equipped to be able to answer his probing questions, in an attempt to make Christians look like absolute “nut cases” who had no idea why they believed what they did—and of course, we are sure there were cut-and-paste jobs all the way through to ensure people came off poorly.

And the theme of the movie was basically Maher saying over and over again that one “can’t know” about what will happen when you die and that one “can’t know” the truth about life. But even though Maher told us over and over again “we can’t know,” he did know that we “can’t know.” So if he insisted, we “can’t know,” how is it that he could be sure we “can’t know,” when he was trying to force on people all the way through the movie that his view that he knows for sure that you “can’t know?” Oh—and that was only one of the many, many logical fallacies that Maher committed throughout the movie. I guess he “can’t know” himself that he’s not being logical, as one “can’t know” anything for sure about life anyway!

Don’t spend your money to see it! The four of us spent enough on this poor quality “mockumentary” (one staff member, bored with much of the film, was checking his emails during the movie) that enables Maher to throw his tantrum in public with this tirade against the Christian faith. Of course if one “can’t know,” and life is meaningless anyway, one wonders why he even bothers? And if life is without ultimate purpose and meaning, why would he even honor his mother at the end if she is now a part of nothingness?

Bill Maher, like everyone of us, will stand before God one day—death levels the playing field. We do need to pray for Bill—that his heart would be softened, and that God would open his eyes to the truth. You CAN KNOW, Bill: Philippians 3:10 “… that I MAY KNOW Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death.

1 John 5:13 “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you MAY KNOW that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
1 John 5:20 “And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we MAY KNOW Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

DEVOTION

Diseased from within

(1Kings 8:38,46) What prayer and supplication soever be made by any man, or by all thy people Israel, which shall know every man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house…If they sin against thee, (for there is no man that sinneth not,) and thou be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captives unto the land of the enemy, far or near;

We are diseased from within and the measure of how much a person turns to God is determined by how much he knows the desperate plague of his own heart.
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying—and today, pray especially for Bill Maher that he ‘MAY KNOW.
