Well, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is in the news again because it keeps making discoveries about galaxies that astronomers and astrophysicists did not expect. This time, the discovery is regarding evidence of supposed “star bars,” structures formed in galaxies that supposedly existed only a couple billion years after the big bang. These star bars are regions of heavy star density often found at the center of spiral galaxies (like our Milky Way), which are supposed to be star-birthing “factories.”
Now, why is it a problem that these star bars were found in some distant galaxies? The researchers were surprised because they expected the universe at that stage (allegedly up to 11.5 billion years ago) to be quite turbulent, with lots of collisions and mergers between galaxies and lots of gas that hadn’t yet formed into stars. Instead, one of the journal paper’s coauthors said,
Galaxies in the early universe are maturing much faster than we thought. . . . However, thanks to the JWST, we are seeing a lot of these bars much earlier in the life of the universe, which means that galaxies were at a more settled stage in their evolution than previously thought. This means we will have to adjust our views on early galaxy evolution.
And another stated,
We find that many more bars were present in the early universe than previously found in Hubble studies, implying that bar-driven galaxy evolution has been happening for much longer than previously thought. . . . The simulations of the universe now need to be scrutinized to see if we get the same results as the observations we’ve made with the JWST. We have to think outside of what we thought we knew.
In other words, evolution (in this case, stellar evolution) is being rewritten . . . again! And the universe is mature wherever they look! How could this be? Unless it was created of course!
When secular astronomers look at distant galaxies, they automatically assume that they are looking back in time.
When secular astronomers look at distant galaxies, they automatically assume that they are looking back in time. The “looking” back in time claim is an assumption based on an evolutionary worldview of millions of years that is necessary for them to describe how everything in the universe began through cosmological evolution. But this is circular reasoning as AiG’s Rob Webb has previously explained,
But note that when making this claim, they’ve already merely assumed cosmological evolution (by assuming star/planet formation occurred in the early stages of galaxies) in order to prove cosmological evolution (via “looking” back in time). . . . So, for this mission, the JWST will not actually be “looking” back in time. Rather, it’ll be examining distant galaxies (which indeed are very far away in space) that have been in existence since the beginning of creation for thousands (not billions) of years. These observations from JWST will not show us how (or when) these heavenly objects were formed, but rather what they look like by directly imaging Jupiter-size planets orbiting nearby stars and analyzing the molecular composition of atmospheres on extra-solar planets.
But don’t worry, no matter what is found by the JWST that argues against the cosmological evolutionary worldview, they will be able to spin it and fold it into their big bang fairytale! Just as they did with heavier elements (with atomic weights greater than hydrogen, helium, and lithium) in the “early” universe. Their worldview is so elastic it can accommodate anything and everything, so we will continue to see the evolutionary model change with every new discovery.
While our models can and do change as we discover more about God’s creation, our basic interpretive framework doesn’t change because God’s Word doesn’t change!
I’m thankful that, as Christians, we have a worldview grounded in the absolute history given to us in God’s Word. While our models can and do change as we discover more about God’s creation, our basic interpretive framework doesn’t change because God’s Word doesn’t change!
