Well, here’s a headline you might be surprised to see: “Sweet Tooth—Ethiopian Wolves Seen Feeding on Nectar.” That’s right, the Ethiopian wolf has been newly documented with a surprising behavior: feeding on nectar. Multiple wolves from multiple packs were observed burying their noses in red hot poker flowers for a swallow of the sweet, sugary liquid that we normally think of as only attracting insects or hummingbirds.
These wolves, native to the Ethiopian highlands, are the world’s rarest canids with only 500 individuals, spread out in 99 packs, left in the wild. And they’re the first large meat-eating predators to ever be observed stopping to lick flowers for the sweet nectar. Because the wolves pick up pollen on their noses as they go in for the nectar, they may even be pollinating the plants in the process.
It’s yet another reminder of a time when all creatures—including those of the dog kind (all canids)—were exclusively vegetarian (Genesis 1:30).
Now, why do I highlight this unusual behavior in an obscure member of the dog kind? Well, because it’s yet another reminder of a time when all creatures—including those of the dog kind (all canids)—were exclusively vegetarian (Genesis 1:30).
Genesis tells us that God’s original creation was “very good” and that every living creature was created to eat plants. It wasn’t until after Adam and Eve sinned and broke God’s creation that animals—such as dogs—began to eat meat. This interaction between dogs and nectar-producing flowers is a reminder of that lost world.
But we have the hope that someday Jesus will return and make a new heaven and a new earth where there will be no more death.
