Value of Human Life DVDs—Created in His Image

Despite decades of Christian efforts to restore the sanctity of human life in society’s conscience, the legal system and culture continue to condone abortion. So should we throw up our hands and stop expecting a secular culture to respect life? No, God commands us, “Open your mouth for the speechless . . .” (Proverbs 31:8). In other words, intercede for those who cannot help themselves. Life: Created in His Image is a new series of DVDs co-produced by Answers in Genesis and the American Family Association. It equips Christians with biblical insights to speak out intelligently on life issues, including eugenics, abortion, suicide, euthanasia, stem cell research, and cloning.

Eugenics Today

Most people know of the Nazis’ eugenics experiment—Hitler’s dream of a super race and its deadly results. But they may be surprised to learn that a well-funded eugenics movement was underway in America before Hitler and continues today. Many parents unwittingly participate in eugenics when they abort babies who have perceived abnormalities. Ninety-two percent of women whose babies are diagnosed with Down syndrome choose abortion. Even most human embryos created for in vitro fertilization are allowed to die if they are considered superfluous or found to be “abnormal.”

Dr. Georgia Purdom, geneticist and speaker for Answers in Genesis, gives an overview of eugenics (including the history of Planned Parenthood) that reveals the tactics of those who wish to rid society of the “less desirables.”

When Does Life Begin?

We cannot determine scientifically when a soul is created. The video series makes clear that we must look to the Creator to answer this question. The Bible repeatedly refers to the unborn as “children” (Genesis 25:21–22) and “baby” (Luke 1:41–44). John the Baptist leapt for joy in his mother’s womb and was filled with the Holy Spirit before he was born. God knows us even before He forms us in the womb (Jeremiah 1:4–5 and Isaiah 44:2). He treats us as fully human from the beginning.

Right to Die

Those who attack the sanctity of life often twist words to justify their claims, saying that people have the “right” to end life under certain circumstances. For instance, they defend suicide as the “right to die,” and dub euthanasia “mercy killing.” Dr. Tommy Mitchell, a physician for more than twenty years, puts the difficult issues of death and suffering in proper biblical perspective. Our lives are not our own (1 Corinthians 6:19–20; Romans 11:36); God owns us, and we are only stewards of the life He gives us (Romans 14:12). Trusting in a sovereign God means we must leave the timing and manner of death in His hands. Dr. Mitchell also explains the difference between active and passive euthanasia and shows when “enough is enough.”

In a society that has bought into the evolutionary idea that human life has no more value than that of an owl or a worm, this DVD series is well worth having. In this election year, it may be priceless!
