In November 2024, Great Britain voted to legalize euthanasia. With this ruling, they joined countries like Canada, Colombia, and the Netherlands.
Proponents of euthanasia argue that assisted suicide is compassionate, allowing people to escape suffering. But the reality is that euthanasia destroys another person’s life. It is murder in God’s eyes, and God forbids murder for any reason (Exodus 20:13). He alone holds authority over life and death.
We do, however, have a responsibility to value life in all sorts of ways, including alleviating pain and suffering as much as possible (without simply ending the life). Christians should reach out to the sick and hurting and point them to the comfort of hope in Christ in a broken world and the promise of new life to come for those who follow him.
