Tomorrow, Sunday, we will celebrate the life and homegoing of our friend and AiG colleague Dr. Tommy Mitchell. As we shared four days ago, Tommy, a terrific speaker and talented writer at AiG for almost 15 years, passed away in his adopted Kentucky. A celebration of his life and legacy will be held in Cincinnati on Sunday at 6 p.m. (with visitation from 3 p.m.–6 p.m.) at Friendship Baptist Church, where Tommy and his wife Liz attended.*
As you pray for the whole family, including his daughters Mary, Ashley, and Sarah, please be encouraged as you learn about this wonderful defender of the Christian faith through these photos. He travelled the world giving lectures on creation-apologetics and wrote countless articles and several science books. He also produced videos on a wide range of topics, from dinosaurs to an answer to the often-asked question of why a loving, all-powerful God allows suffering and, yes, death in this world.
In no particular order:
-
A younger Tommy takes a break from the 1999 Hendersonville AiG seminar he chaired to take this photo with Ken Ham and compare gaudy ties. The Nashville-area conference drew several thousand people. The friendship between the two men would become quite strong over the next 20 years.
-
Tommy was a doting grandfather of Judy (seen here; born 2017) and Killian (born last month), to daughter Ashley.
-
This is not photoshopped. Tommy actually walked with a lion during a South African safari (June 2019).
-
Tommy and Liz enjoying exotic Istanbul this summer.
-
Photo taken by Tommy of the plane which took him far north in Alberta, Canada, on a frigid day in March 2018 to speak at a church in remote La Crete. We share this photo to help let you know that Tommy was a real trooper in proclaiming the creation/gospel message and would go wherever the need was.
-
Tommy was Ken Ham’s frequent nemesis at cribbage. Tommy won this match, as his face shows.
-
Tommy, a former evolutionist, took great satisfaction being able to teach the truths of Genesis to tens of thousands of children and teens since 2005.
-
This package contained the first copies of volume four of Tommy’s series of books on the human body. A sixth volume is currently in production.
-
Tommy and Liz at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich outside London (2011), at the spot of the Prime Meridian Line where, at Longitude 0°, east meets west. Liz: “It was the perfect picture of us because we are as different as the east is from the west, but beside each other all the way.”
Your prayers of comfort for Tommy’s family and AiG colleagues are much appreciated this weekend. Thank you.
