“We three kings of Orient are…”—now, this song, originally written for a pageant, honors the journey of the wisemen. But is it biblical?

Well, we don’t know for sure how many wisemen visited Jesus. And they weren’t kings—they were magi, or wisemen.

But this carol is still beautiful for its Christology. The first gift, gold, is for Jesus, “King forever, ceasing never.” Frankincense “owns a Deity nigh,” who is “God on high,” worthy of our worship. And myrrh represents Jesus’ ultimate purpose: bleeding, dying, sealed in the stone-cold tomb. Then the song ends with Jesus arising as “King.”
