Earlier this week, I wrote about the evil legacy of a French scientist, Étienne-Émile Baulieu, who died recently at the age of 98. This man was the inventor of the abortion pill, a chemical concoction that has cost untold millions of children their lives and has seriously harmed women. For Father’s Day today, I thought I would contrast his legacy with that of a man whose passing didn’t make the headlines but whose legacy is a rich and godly one: my father, Mervyn Ham.
Just this past week, on Monday, June 9, it was the 30th anniversary of my father leaving his earthly home for his heavenly one. As I reflect on this 30th anniversary, I think it’s worth noting it fell on the same week as our Legacy Conference commemorating 50 years of my teaching on creation apologetics. (I gave my first talk on creation apologetics in 1975 at Dalby Baptist Church in the country town of Dalby.)
The Answers in Genesis ministry has grown into a major apologetics, evangelistic, biblical-authority ministry which, over the years, has produced a plethora of resources impacting many tens of millions of people and has built the two leading Christian themed attractions, the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum.
It’s all part of a legacy—a legacy of parents who taught me to stand boldly and uncompromisingly on God’s Word and have a heart for reaching people with the gospel.
And it’s all part of a legacy—a legacy of parents who taught me to stand boldly and uncompromisingly on God’s Word and have a heart for reaching people with the gospel. They taught me how to defend the Christian faith.
My father is no longer on earth, but his legacy lives on and increases daily!
On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday this past week, I gave eight of my classic presentations at the Ark Encounter’s Answers Center. These programs were videoed for our streaming platform, Answers TV. One of the talks I gave was about my personal testimony and how the ministry of AiG and the attractions came to be. It’s a wonderful story of faith and a faithful God.
I praise the Lord for a godly father and mother who did all they could to ensure their children were brought up knowing the truth of God’s Word and how to defend the Christian faith against attacks on God’s Word. After my mother went to her heavenly home in 2019, her body was buried with my father’s, and a new gravestone with both names was placed on the graves.
In a way, this was an emotional week thinking about the 30th anniversary of my father’s passing and the 50th anniversary of the Lord opening the door for me to begin a ministry of creation apologetics and biblical authority. What a legacy—a legacy of affirming the truth of God’s Word, saving lives through this pro-life ministry, and sharing the gospel—so different from the evil legacy of Étienne-Émile Baulieu.
Here are photos showing the church building (a new church has since been built, so it’s no longer there) where I gave my first creation apologetics talk, my father and mother’s gravestone, the house the AiG ministry really started in back in 1977, and how the ministry has grown today with the two attractions and our new HQ for various staff and our Answers Academy Christian school.
All I can do is say, “Praise the Lord for what he has done and praise the Lord for the godly legacy of my father and mother.”
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! (Psalm 150:6)
And happy Father’s Day to all of the dads out there—may you leave a godly legacy for the next generation!
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken
