Why Is the Tower of Babel Significant?

When you visit the Ark Encounter attraction in Northern Kentucky, make sure you spend time at the Babel exhibit on the third deck. Even though you’ll rarely ever hear a sermon on Genesis 11, the tower of Babel is a significant event in history because it explains the origin of different languages and the dispersion of people across the earth.

You see, after the global flood of Noah’s day, God commanded humanity to “fill the earth” (Genesis 9:1), but instead they chose to settle in one place and build a tower to make a name for themselves (Genesis 11:4). This act of disobedience led God to confuse their language, causing them to scatter across the globe.

It’s important to note that all of the languages spoken today have been traced back to a group of language families that bear no relationship with each other—exactly what we would expect when we start with the biblical account of God giving different languages at Babel.

And it’s important to note that all of the languages spoken today have been traced back to a group of language families that bear no relationship with each other—exactly what we would expect when we start with the biblical account of God giving different languages at Babel. From an evolutionary perspective, all languages should be related—but they are not! It’s another reminder that the Bible’s history is true. Evolution is a fairy tale not supported by observational science.

Now, as our exhibit at the Ark explains, understanding this Babel event is crucial for several reasons:

  • It demonstrates human rebellion: The tower of Babel illustrates humanity’s tendency to rebel against God’s commands, seeking to establish their own authority and unity apart from him.
  • It explains linguistic diversity: It provides a biblical explanation for the diversity of languages, which aligns with the observable linguistic differences we see today.
  • It explains the foundation for nations: The dispersion at Babel set the stage for the formation of different nations and cultures, all descending from Noah’s family.
  • The tower of Babel serves as a reminder of the futility of human pride and the importance of obedience to God.

I encourage you to come and visit us soon. All children 10 and under enjoy free admission (and I encourage you to also visit the Creation Museum and take advantage of our special Family Adventure Days happening every Monday through April and May, except Memorial Day).

Go to ArkEncounter.com to plan your visit to the life-size Noah’s Ark.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken
