Should You Limit Your Love?

“Everyone did what was right in his own eyes” (Judges 21:25). This verse from the Old Testament may as well be describing Western culture today instead of ancient Israel. And nowhere is this more strikingly seen than in the anti-biblical sexual revolution sweeping the West.

Of course, we know this is ultimately a spiritual battle (Ephesians 6:12) and that this revolution is part of Satan’s attack against God’s first institutions—marriage and the family. We’ve seen God’s boundaries for sex (for one man and one woman within marriage) ignored, we’ve seen the definition of marriage (one man for one woman) completely reinterpreted, and we’ve even seen God’s design for gender (male and female) twisted and disregarded. And the attacks on marriage and the family will only continue as our culture increasingly mocks and ignores God’s Word and removes reminders (nativity scenes, crosses, and so on) of God and his Word from the culture.

We’re seeing Romans 1:28 playing out before our eyes:

And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.

There’s More to Come

And gay “marriage” and transgender are certainly not the extremes of this revolution. We’re increasingly seeing news items relating to polyamory, the idea of someone having multiple supposedly committed relationships. The BBC in the UK just ran a story about three such individuals who are all in polyamorous relationships. The story focused on a young woman named Noni who claims she “felt trapped and claustrophobic in monogamous relationships, no matter how much in love she was.” She added,

I just don’t see why I should artificially limit the amount of love that I put out into the world. I’m greedy. I like people liking me.

Instead of going to God’s Word for what is right and wrong, Noni and many others like her are simply relying on their own sinful thoughts and feelings. At the end of the article Noni says,

The more we engage with people and talk about it, the more accepted it is going to become, slowly but surely.

I would not say we are blazing a trail but we are definitely creating an environment that allows for a healthy community.

And, sadly, she’s probably right: our culture is going to become more accepting of her sinful lifestyle. The world has already redefined marriage to include same-sex relationships, so how can they not expand the definition to include polyamory? There’s no absolute standard anymore except arbitrary human opinion, so how can anyone say what Noni is doing is wrong?

Well, as believers we can say with authority that Noni’s lifestyle is sinful because God’s Word is the ultimate authority and our Creator has defined marriage as between one man and one woman for life (Genesis 1:27, 2:24). As believers, we recognize God’s Word as the authority, but it is authoritative whether we or anyone else recognizes it as such or not.

The message of God’s Word for our dying culture is simple: repent and place your faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Then build your worldview on the absolute authority of the Word of God.
