If you’re Canadian and pro-life, well, you’re “not in line” with the government or society, according to the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau. In a recent speech during his town hall tour across the country, Trudeau claimed that pro-life groups that aim to end abortion are “not in line with where we are as a government and, quite frankly, where we are at as a society.” His statement was met with enthusiastic applause.
Trudeau’s comments come in the wake of a decision by the federal government to require any business or group that wants to apply for the Canada Summer Jobs program, which provides funding for business and other groups to hire students, to sign an attestation that they respect the Charter of Rights and Freedoms—including the so-called “right” to abortion (which is really child murder!).
He went on to declare,
Defending rights and freedoms is at the core of who I am and is the core of what Canada is. . . . At the same time, we need to know there is a difference between freedom of expression and acting on those freedoms.
As I’ve pointed out before, throughout the West we’re seeing this intolerant way of thinking increase. You can believe whatever you want, but you can’t act on those beliefs. But that is not freedom of religion at all!
The prime minister went on to say (again to cheering and applause):
Women have fought for generations for the right to control their own bodies, to be able to choose for themselves what to do with their bodies. . . . When those beliefs lead to actions aimed to restrict a women’s right on what to do with her body, that’s where we draw the line.
But what about the females—after all, half of abortion victims are girls—who never get a chance to “choose for themselves what to do with their bodies” because their bodies were violently destroyed when they were murdered in their mother’s wombs? Do those girls not deserve even the most basic right, the right to life?
Scientifically and biblically, life begins at fertilization.
Abortion has nothing whatsoever to do with telling a woman what to do with her body. The child growing in her womb is not part of her body like an appendix or gall bladder. It’s a unique individual with its own unique DNA—a unique combination of genetic information, fingerprints, personality, and more. All of the genetic information needed to create a person is present from the moment of fertilization—nothing new is added and nothing is taken away. Scientifically and biblically, life begins at fertilization.
One of our staff members, Avery Foley, who is Canadian, wrote this about the prime minister’s statements:
If believing that everyone has a right to life—the most basic human right—makes me “not in line” with society, I will gladly be out of line! Our prime minister certainly does not speak for all Canadians when he makes these statements about what Canada supposedly stands for. Many Canadians, like myself, stand for the right to life for everyone—regardless of their level of development or dependency. All human life is precious because we are made in the image of God [Genesis 1:27]—that’s where our unique value and dignity come from.
