This may come as a shock to you, but the American Atheists have released a billboard I can actually support! Each year as sort of their own (purposeless) holiday tradition, this group puts up several billboards in the United States. Usually the boards mock Christianity or urge people to skip church (as one of their current billboards does). But this year, to promote the upcoming American Atheist National Convention in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, they created a different kind of billboard—one I can support!
This billboard reads, “Just like Santa Claus, the atheists are comin’ to town.” Now I can support this atheist billboard because Santa Claus is fiction and so is atheism (Romans 1:20). So to compare Santa Claus to atheism is an accurate comparison. Really, because it offers no ultimate hope, purpose, or meaning, atheism is a meaningless anti-God religion, teaching fiction.
Why don’t they despise Santa since he’s a fictional character, just as they claim Jesus is?
This isn’t the first billboard atheists have used that appeals to Santa. It’s interesting that they vehemently hate God and work to get people to reject him and skip church, but they will use imagery of Santa. Why don’t they despise Santa since he’s a fictional character, just as they claim Jesus is?
Well, it’s because they are engaged in a spiritual battle. They hate God and are suppressing the truth in unrighteousness. (Atheists are described in Romans chapter 1,). It’s heartbreaking that they are rejecting their Creator and the free offer of salvation he extends to them—in fact to all.
Their second billboard features a nativity scene and encourages people to “Just skip church. It’s all fake news!” Atheists have no positive message for their purposeless, meaningless religion—so they mostly attack Christianity, as they do in this new billboard. They continually shake their fist at God and reject the gospel in their rebellion against their Creator.
We encourage atheists and others to read about the perfect creation, marred by our sin; the promise of a Savior; and birth, death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ the God-man in God’s Word. They will discover what he came to do for them—and why. That babe in the manger (promised in Genesis 3) grew up to die for the sins of mankind and now offers the free gift of eternal life to all who will believe. Open the Bible and discover its message of grace and mercy for yourself. Salvation through Jesus Christ is the greatest Christmas gift you could ever receive.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16)
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken
