Sunday marks the 44th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the court case in which the United States Supreme Court made the tragic decision to legalize abortion. Since that day more than 59 million babies have been brutally killed in their mother’s womb in the United States. Let that number sink in for a moment—59 million. The American Revolution took the lives of 4,435 soldiers. Roughly 17 million casualties resulted from World War I. An estimated 6 million Jews were killed in the Holocaust. However, the 59 million murders by abortion is more than all of these put together. This makes even the horrific number of innocent souls killed in the Holocaust pale in comparison!
In 1984 President Reagan created National Sanctity of Human Life Day on January 22 to commemorate this sad day. Use this day to celebrate God’s gift of life, remember those who have lost their lives, and commit to protecting and advocating for the preservation of human life at all stages.
The unborn, like all human beings, are fearfully and wonderfully created (Psalm 139:14) in the very image of God (Genesis 1:27). The unborn have all the genetic material to form a unique person from the very moment of fertilization. Killing the unborn, at any stage of development, is nothing less than murder. That’s a harsh word—murder—but it aptly describes the taking of an innocent life. And, as believers, it should break our hearts as it surely breaks the heart of our Father, the Creator.
Now, for those mothers and fathers who have made the decision to take their baby’s life, and for those doctors, nurses, and others who participate in this, there is hope. There is no sin too big for God to forgive. Jesus came and died for all sinners, including those who commit murder (Romans 5:8). I encourage you, even today, to repent of your sin and put your faith in Jesus Christ and what He did for you.
