Kids’ Magazine to Feature Same-Sex Families

A lesbian mom reportedly complained that the magazine Hello, geared toward pretoddlers, toddlers, and their parents and published by Highlights, didn’t feature any same-sex “families.” Apparently Highlights explained that they believe parents should decide when to bring up the topic because it’s “still new, and parents are still learning how to approach the subject with their children, even the very little ones.” But after backlash from the LGBT community, Highlights committed to including same-sex families in future publications.

Highlighting the Change in our Culture

Now, because this magazine doesn’t claim to be a Christian publication, we can’t expect them to hold to biblical morality or portray it in their magazine. The inclusion of same-sex “families” in a children’s publication highlights (pun intended!) the change that is going on in our culture.

Same-sex relationships and “families” are increasingly being celebrated and portrayed as normal and acceptable (even though only a very small minority of such “families” embrace this lifestyle). This isn’t a surprise since our culture has rejected God’s Word as the foundation for their thinking. And without the foundation of God’s Word, man determines truth.

Our culture is going to continue pushing their views of “marriage” and “family” on children at younger and younger ages. That’s why it’s so important that we teach our children to think biblically from a young age. I encourage you to have meaningful discussions with your kids regarding what God’s Word says about gay “marriage” and gender. Teach them that according to God’s Word

• Marriage was designed to be between one man and one woman for life (Genesis 2:22, 24),
• We were created male and female (Genesis 1:27), and since God is the Creator, we don’t have the right to redefine what He has created.
• We can’t just change what marriage and gender mean, based on our own wisdom. God knows what is best for us, and we need to obey Him and His Word.

Don’t wait for the culture to indoctrinate your children with anti-God, antibiblical views—be proactive and teach your kids to start their thinking with God’s Word on this issue.

I encourage you to obtain the many children’s books available through Answers in Genesis (such as A is for Adam) and Kids Answers as an alternate bimonthly publication through Answers magazine that will help ensure that children are taught the true foundation of marriage in Genesis.
