Observations using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) continue to amaze astronomers. As we commented on last year, early results showed that very distant galaxies have structures similar to nearby galaxies. This was unexpected, since it is generally believed that we see very distant galaxies shortly after the big bang, long before such structures were supposed to have evolved.
A new study continues this trend. The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy, meaning that the nucleus of our galaxy has a bar from which spiral arms extend. Barred spiral galaxies are common in the universe, but it has been thought that it takes billions of years for gravitational interactions to cause barred structures to arise. This new study announced that the galaxy ceers-2112 is a barred spiral. Within the big bang model, the estimated redshift of ceers-2112 places it just two billion years after the big bang. It supposedly took most of a billion years for this galaxy to form, leaving far too little time for its bar to have formed.
These new discoveries are no surprise to biblical creationists.
These new discoveries are no surprise to biblical creationists. At the end of day four (the day God made galaxies), God pronounced his creation of that day to be good (Genesis 1:18), and at the end of the six days of creation, God pronounced that all of creation was very good (Genesis 1:31). This goodness refers to completeness, that all that God made was fully formed and fully functioning as he intended. That is, creation was mature by day seven, and there was no evolution required to reach the maturity of creation. Hence, we infer that God made complete galaxies (some with bars) at the very beginning. The new discoveries using the JWST continue to challenge evolutionary ideas, requiring their revision, but the Word of God stands firm among all this.
