Want Your Church to Get Summer Student Job Grants? Support Murdering the Unborn

Canadian government demands church’s “core mandate” must be pro-abortion to apply for funding.

In just another example of how draconian, subversive, and anti-Christian the Canadian government has become, our Liberal employment minister has stated that church groups must support abortion as part of their “core mandate” in order to receive summer student job grants.

This is a blatant example of how far away our society has gone from biblical authority (Answers in Genesis’ core focus) and Christian values. The application process for Canada summer jobs has added the requirement that employers must sign an attestation that their “core mandate” supports reproductive and transgender “rights,” or they will be denied.

Incredibly, our Employment Minister Patty Hajdu has stated this won’t invalidate church groups that disagree with abortion from attaining funding. The National Post notes,

“In fact, my perspective is that it won’t, as long as their core mandate agrees with those hard won rights and freedoms that Canadians expect us to stand up for,” she said.

Her office is aiming to draw a distinction based on the phrase “core mandate,” and says there’s a difference between a group founded solely to oppose abortions and a religious group that happens to hold pro-life beliefs. Yet the application process still means all groups must sign the attestation.

The question is, which Canadians’ hard-won rights? Certainly not Bible-believing Christians that support the concept of the sanctity of life from fertilization.

AiG’s Ken Ham, Dr. Georgia Purdom, and Bodie Hodge discussed this legislation on Answers News on January 25.

The Root of the Problem

Although many Christians are incensed and Facebook and Twitter feeds are exploding with outrage, the question is, what are Christians going to do about it? I wonder if most of them truly understand what the root problem in our culture really is? It is the lack of biblical authority and the acceptance of a naturalistic, humanistic worldview founded on the belief in evolution/millions of years as fact. Remember, this is just months after our Governor General Julie Payette’s speech in Ottawa where she questioned how it was still possible that people believed that “divine intervention” created life because of “science”!

Christians can expect to see more laws, restrictions, and penalties applied to them in the next little while in Canada because our country, for the most part, is ruled by people who have little respect for the Word of God and the principles it teaches. Applied directly to this issue of abortion, years ago the overarching majority would have agreed that a doctor should not prescribe or administer an abortive medicine or procedure because the baby was fully human, created by God and therefore had inherent value. But today, many Canadians (especially millennials) indicate they don’t believe in God, and even many professing Christians declare support for abortion rights. However Scripture is clear that people are specially created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and are not animals.

As Answers in Genesis has pointed out for years, once the history in Genesis was undermined in the West (often helped by church leaders who compromised with man’s theories about the past), the spiritual and moral implications derived from that history were also abandoned over time as people became consistent in their thinking—adopting nonbiblical attitudes and values to go along with their secular humanistic worldview. And once the door of unbelief was unlocked Christians became unable to defend their faith intelligibly to the point where today the Christian church no longer has a voice in society to any large degree.

That’s why the events and resources Answers in Genesis can provide the church in Canada are so needed to revitalize the next generation of believers and equip them to withstand the onslaught of humanistic teaching and share the gospel in this often hostile society.
