Why Teach Children the Attributes of God?

One of our Answers VBS themes is Mystery Island: Tracking Down the One True God. During this mystery adventure, children will discover some of the attributes of God and learn that he is so high above us and so awesome that we will never know everything there is to know about God—that’s what eternity is for! Yet, he is knowable and has revealed himself to us through his Son, Jesus Christ, when he came to earth as our Savior.

Why is teaching children the attributes of God so important? Well, we live in a very pluralistic society. People from across the world, with a variety of religious backgrounds, are our neighbors, coworkers, and friends. It’s popular today to believe that all these religions are basically the same and that you can make God or your gods to be anything you want. Feelings decide truth, and God quickly becomes some fuzzy celestial being who is just about love and making you feel good about yourself. But that’s a false view of God!

There’s only one God, and he has revealed himself to us in Scripture. If we want to know who God is, we can’t look to the culture or our own opinions. We need to look to God’s Word. And in God’s Word we discover many of his attributes, which allows us to get to know him and worship him. And, most importantly, we discover that he is the one and only loving Savior who provides salvation from our sin through Jesus Christ.

If we want kids to have a proper view of God, they need to study the foundation of truth—the Word of God. That’s the vital message they’ll receive through Mystery Island.
