Dingoes, Australia’s native wild dogs, were the subject of a recent genetic study comparing “ancient” DNA with the modern genome of the species. What the study found was that these dogs “arrived in two waves of migration between 3000 and 8000 years ago” (according to evolutionary dating). These members of the dog kind also showed little interbreeding with domestic dogs. So how do we understand this study in a biblical worldview?
Well, we understand that dingoes are dogs—members of the canid kind (the dog family), created on day six of creation week. They “diverged” (were separated from) other dogs sometime after the flood (4,350 years ago). The lower end of the date range above may be right on target, but the older number is inflated because they aren’t accounting for created genomic diversity and the explosion of speciation that occurred rapidly after the flood and are basing those dates on radiocarbon dating (which has its own problems). But this raises the question—how did the dingoes get to Australia to become trapped there and “diverge” (speciate) from other members of their kind?
Skeptics on social media often sneer at the truth of God’s Word with some version of, “If there really was a flood, how did the animals get from the Middle East to Australia? Explain that!” I thought this dingo study was a good opportunity to address this question yet again.
Speciation continued, but, well, dogs remain dogs—there’s no change of kind, just adaptation because of already existing genetic information.
You see, after the flood, the land animal kinds left the ark and entered a brand-new world, a world recovering from catastrophe (something that happens much quicker than most people assume). They would have multiplied rapidly (consider how few predators there were) and begun quickly spreading around the world. After the flood, earth was impacted by an ice age, caused by the flood. Such an ice age would’ve significantly lowered ocean levels, allowing various kinds to “island hop” from the mainland to places like Australia (via land bridges). Once there, they began adapting to that environment, and as the ice age drew to a close, water levels once again rose, isolating organisms. Speciation continued, but, well, dogs remain dogs—there’s no change of kind, just adaptation because of already existing genetic information.
