It seems like we have encountered a lot of earthquakes. We live on what is considered “the ring of fire.” We had an earthquake just the other week that was about a 5 on the Richter scale, and it reminded us of the worst earthquake we encountered, which registered over 7 and was only a few miles from us.
We had just come home from church in the tribe. Little Tanggucina had her first fever and her mom had brought her up for me to take her temperature. They were in the living room with the boys, and I was close by in the kitchen finishing up lunch. The whole house jerked and then a shake and then nothing.
There was a pause that was long enough for us to all realize that we had just experienced an earthquake. Then the whole house started shaking, and we all got up and started for the door, but it was difficult to walk and hard to get out of the house. Glass was rattling and it sounded like everything was breaking and falling.
It only lasted a few minutes, and by the time we reached the porch the worst of it was over, but the trees were still swaying and the ground still rolled.
The first thing our tribal Grandma said was “I thought for sure Jesus was returning!”
Oh, if only He had, right? Our hope is in the return of Christ and the New Heavens and the New Earth. The whole earth is groaning and waiting for things to be restored. So thankful that He alone is in control of earthquakes. He alone holds our lives in His hand.
