Transcript

“O Come, O Come Emmanuel” has a different tone than most Christmas carols: a tone of “longing.” The song is rich in Old Testament allusions. That includes Messianic titles from the Old Testament that foreshadow Jesus and what he would come to do.

It begins with Israel longing for the Messiah to arrive and ends with the church longing for Christ’s second coming. It’s a beautiful picture of the “already” of salvation and the “not yet,” as we await Christ’s eternal kingdom.

As believers we rejoice that Jesus has come and made a way of salvation. And, as we look at this broken world, we long for the day when Emmanuel comes again.
