Happy is an elephant that lives at the Bronx Zoo. And last year a US court confirmed that Happy’s not a person. Of course not! But the group arguing his case believes an elephant is a person because it has “self-awareness and autonomy.” But is that what determines our personhood?

No. Many animals are smart, can communicate to a certain extent, and have their own unique personality. But those characteristics are not what make humans persons.

What ultimately makes us humans unique and set apart from animals is how God created us—in his very image, says Genesis chapter one.

Elephants aren’t made in God’s image, so they aren’t persons.
