In first Samuel, the prophet anoints the next king of Israel. He thinks it’ll be David’s brother based on external appearance. But God tells him not to look on the outward appearance, for God looks at the heart.
In our culture, we make a big deal about outward appearance, whether it’s weight, attractiveness, or the shade of our skin. But these differences are minor! For example, the genetic difference between any two people groups is only a fraction of one percent of our DNA! It’s an incredibly small difference . . . and yet people focus heavily on it!
Let’s not be like the world, obsessing over minor, outward differences. Let’s look at the heart, the way God does!
