Most geologic processes today happen very slowly. So scientists assume that’s how most of the geologic features we see today had formed. Then Mount St. Helens exploded!

In 1980, scientists watched two-hundred-foot-tall trees on a mountain snap like toothpicks. By afternoon, one million trees floated in the nearby lake. These logs sank … and were soon buried in layers of mud.

Around the world we find fossil trees buried in rock layers. Geologists assume they fossilized slowly. But Mount St. Helens showed that’s not the case! Like the trees buried by Mount St. Helens, those fossil trees were buried in a catastrophe—the flood of Genesis!
