As researchers map the genomes of human fossils, they’re realizing the relationship between so-called “ancient’ humans is more complex than they thought. These people groups, such as Neanderthals, had children with one another … and with so-called “modern” humans.

Now, in an evolutionary view, Neanderthals are cousins of modern humans. But let’s start with what the Bible tells us. Adam and Eve were the first people and only eight of their descendants survived the global flood. This means Neanderthals are descendants of Adam, made in God’s image. They were simply varieties of humans, real humans, who lived after the flood—during the ice age.
