Transcript

Scientist Richard Lenski has been growing the bacteria E. coli in the lab for nearly 30 years. Since the generation times are really short for bacteria, he’s grown over 60,000 generations.

Lenski’s work is often touted as evidence of evolution “in action.” Why? Because a certain gene that’s normally switched off is now switched on. But that’s not evolution! The information was already there. The lab conditions made it beneficial to switch that gene back on.

What Lenski’s experiments are really showing is that bacteria remain bacteria. After 60,000 generations, his E. coli haven’t turned into anything else . . . or gained any new information.
