Last year a study claimed that the construction of a dam in Brazil was driving lizard evolution.

Here’s what happened: this dam created several new islands, separating a population of lizards from the mainland. Within just fifteen years, these lizards had bigger heads and mouths. They could now eat the larger insects on the islands.

But is this evolution? Well, the lizards remained, well, lizards. None of them gained any new genetic information. All that happened was the lizards became adapted to their environment, based on the genetic information they already had.

This is not evolution in action! It’s just adaptation and natural selection.

It’s just lizards producing lizards.
