Let us assume the impossible—that life managed to evolve. How did we ever get from one cell to multicellular life? Well, the typical answer is “by natural selection and mutations.”

But most mutations are either harmful or neutral. Only a very few have some positive effects in certain environments. So, natural selection only works for a very, very small number of mutations in a very specific environment.

Now, both mutations and natural selection work with already-existing genetic information. They can’t produce brand-new information! So, where did the genetic information come from to turn a single cell into a multicellular organism?
