November 29, 2022: A Sad Day in American History

Tuesday, November 29, 2022, was a sad day in American history as, in a 61–36 vote, the US Senate passed a bill, called the “Respect for Marriage Act” (RMA), to codify same-sex “marriage” into law (the bill must pass through the House again, before being signed by President Biden). This bill made it through the Senate with 100% Democratic support, along with the support of 12 Republicans.

Now this bill is being called the “Respect for Marriage Act,” but a number of Christians have referred to it as the “Disrespect for Marriage Act”—it’s certainly the “Redefinition of Marriage Act,” which means the “Rejection of God’s Definition of Marriage Act.”

It’s so sad to see such wickedness in this nation as political leaders redefine and pervert the institution of marriage that God created.

It’s so sad to see such wickedness in this nation as political leaders redefine and pervert the institution of marriage that God created. Yes, God—not the government, society, or culture—created marriage, and there’s only one true marriage, one man and one woman (Genesis 1:27; Genesis 2:24). US politicians don’t have the authority (even if they think they do) to redefine marriage!

And not only does such a bill thumb its nose at the God who created marriage, but it’s a dangerous threat to religious liberty. As others have pointed out:

the RMA applies to everyone “acting under color of law” – a phrase that has been interpreted to refer to state-funded services like adoption centers – and contains a “private right of action” clause that allows anyone “harmed by a violation” to bring civil action “for declaratory and injunctive relief.”

This dangerously cynical and completely unnecessary bill is a direct attack on the First Amendment . . . the RMA “exposes Americans throughout the country to predatory lawsuits by activists seeking to use the threat of litigation to silence debate and exclude people of faith from the public square.”

Today, the Senate has chosen to disregard legitimate concerns about the undeniable harms of this bill.

As I said, Tuesday was a sad day in this nation, and troubling days lie ahead for Christians trying to live according to their biblical beliefs.

I will also add a warning to all politicians, whether Democrat or Republican, and those who celebrate this perversion of God’s design: Beware, a day of judgment is coming.

I will punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; I will put an end to the pomp of the arrogant, and lay low the pompous pride of the ruthless. (Isaiah 13:11)

But there is still time to repent and find grace and mercy in the cross of Christ! Turn from evil and celebrating evil, and trust in Christ today before it’s too late!
