Have you ever gone into debt to attend a wedding? Recently an AiG staff member saw an article that stated, “Almost every aspect of planning, hosting and attending weddings is getting pricier. Even guests are going into wedding debt . . . The average cost of a wedding in the U.S. ticked up from $28,000 to $29,000 from 2022 to 2023.” Now that’s expensive (and probably not strictly necessary!), but it’s interesting that even in our day of casual “hook-ups” and a lack of commitment, weddings are still a big deal!
It’s about two people becoming “one flesh.”
And yes, weddings are a big deal. And biblically we understand why: marriage matters! The union of one man and one woman is more than just “a piece of paper” or a big party you get to throw for your friends and family. It’s about two people becoming “one flesh.” It’s a “mystery,”
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. (Ephesians 5:31–32)
Yes, two becoming one is a mystery and even more so for the Christian who realizes that marriage is also a picture of Christ (the groom) and the church (the bride).
By the way, the Apostle Paul attests to the truth of Genesis 2:24 in the above passage. The origin of marriage is in Genesis!
Our social media team recently made a short video about Christianity and weddings. I encourage you to watch it below:
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
