Chick-Fil-A Expansion into Canada Sparks LGBT Outrage

The American chicken sandwich chain Chick-Fil-A recently announced it was expanding into Canada, with its first location opening in Canada’s largest city, Toronto. But the news quickly sparked outrage from some of the Canadian LGBT community. Why? Not because the chicken isn’t delicious but because the CEO believes in biblical marriage.

Canadians on Twitter were referring to Chick-Fil-A (or should the Canadian branch be Chick-Fil-eh?) as “homophobic” and a “bigoted and discriminatory business” promoting “hatred.” But who is really being bigoted, discriminatory, and filled with hate? Those who are rushing to boycott and slam Chick-Fil-A. They claim Canada is a diverse, tolerant country—yet they are showing no tolerance for a CEO’s belief about marriage and gender that doesn’t match theirs. They want tolerance of what they already believe, not true tolerance that respects opposing views. Besides, this restaurant merely sells food and doesn’t disseminate any information about marriage!

These LGBT activists have every right to not eat at Chick-Fil-A if they don’t want to. But they can’t claim they are doing it because they want tolerance and stand against discrimination. By lambasting this business for the CEO’s personal beliefs, they are showing their own intolerance and discrimination very clearly.

Throughout the West, there’s a growing intolerance of beliefs that differ from the status quo, especially regarding marriage and gender. Those who believe what the Bible teaches—that we’re created male and female (Genesis 1:27) and that marriage is defined as a lifelong union between one man and one woman (Genesis 2:24)—will increasingly be hated for what they believe. But this is no surprise. The Bible tells us that men love darkness rather than light (John 3:19).

So if this kind of intolerance and hate is directed toward us (which it frequently is here at AiG), how should we respond? With grace and truth, just as Jesus did (John 1:14). We don’t change truth—God’s Word is our authority on marriage and gender, and we will not depart from that foundation. But we need to present that truth and our reason for it (God’s Word is our authority) with grace, pointing people toward the life-saving message of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
